Iain Dowie Academy Masterclass

Updated: Jan 16, 2020

On Sunday 18th August the Academy Director Norman Kelly secured the services of Iain Dowie to put on a coaching masterclass for not only the Academy coaches but also for coaches from Ards Rangers, Glentoran and Ridgeway.

Iain, capped 59 times for N Ireland, a player at Luton and QPR among others, has managed at clubs like Oldham Athletic and QPR. He is also a Pro Licence holder with a wealth of playing, coaching and managing experience under his belt. He enthralled all the coaches with his knowledge, illuminated with great examples from his career and gave great tips for all present. He covered basic possession drills and then some specific defending and attacking sessions and spent some time on team shape encouraging ideas from the watching coaches. The Academy would like to thank their young players who worked hard for two hours to enable Iain to illustrate his points, principles and ideas.

The day didn’t end there though , everyone was invited back to the Ards Club afterwards for refreshments and a buffet , following which there was a very entertaining Question and Answer session, where Iain was joined by Warren Feeney the Ards FC first team manager. They shared some great stories and experiences from their playing careers both informative and entertaining, Iain in particular was very frank about some of his experiences from the game. They covered all topics from coaching through playing and managing , who they played with and against, their most memorable stadiums and toughest opponents. Of course their were tour tales as well which are probably best not put in print.

The committee at the Academy would like to put on record their appreciation to Iain who started his day at 4.30am in order to get here to deliver the masterclass, a true professional.
