Match Report: Ards 0-4 Carrick Rangers
Danske Bank Premiership
Saturday February 10th, 2018
By Jana McCabe.
With Carrick in the relegation play-off place, only one point off the bottom and without a win in 2018, the three points on offer at the Bangor Fuels Arena were crucial for the away side, whilst Ards were looking to bounce back after last week's Irish Cup Sixth Round exit at Loughgall.
Just eight minutes in to the game Carrick took the lead with on-loan Jonathan Smith being allowed the time to turn in the Ards penalty area and calmly slot his shot past Sam Johnston. Carrick pushed for a second with efforts from both Ralph Kottoy and Darren Henderson just failing to find the target.
In a rare attack from the home side, Jonah Mitchell's shot from the edge of the area went narrowly wide in the 18th minute. Nathan Hanley was then booked, before Ards captain Gareth Tommons claimed for a spot-kick in the 39th minute after he was fouled in the area, but the referee ignored his lengthy appeal.
In the 42nd minute a good pass from Reece Glendinning gave Mitchell a half sight at goal, but he couldn't make anything of the chance, with the half ending with the away side one ahead.
Just three minutes in to the second half Carrick extended their lead with Patrick McNally scoring after a scramble in the penalty area. Jonah Mitchell was then booked before, just six minutes after scoring their second, Carrick scored again. It was a sense of deja-vu as the Ards defence again failed to clear their lines giving Lee Chapman time to control and shoot home in the 59th minute.
Colin Nixon then made a triple substitution with Nathan Hanley, Jonah Mitchell and the bloodied Cameron Stewart leaving the field replaced by Scott Davidson, Guillaume Keke and Marc McKenna.
In the 66th minute Eamon Scannell had a good chance but his shot just cleared the bar whilst, in the 77th minute, Keke's shot was cleared off the line by Daniel Larmour. However, Scannell didn't have to wait long for another chance with an accurate cross
from Chapman finding him with his finish making it 4-0 in the 76th minute.
David McAllister had a good chance for Ards in the 88th minute, but couldn't find the net for even a consolation goal for Ards, with the game finishing 4-0 to the away side, with Reece Glendinning picking up the Ards man of the match award.
So, one to forget for Ards, who failed to show up, with a great win for Carrick in their fight against relegation. Attention now turns to Tuesday night's rescheduled game against Glenavon, abandoned last month due to adverse weather conditions. Hopefully Ards can end their 3-game losing streak then.
